Why do people get more than 1 life imprisonments?

Because they commit separate acts (called counts) that deserve separate punishment. If I commit 3 counts of homicide, killing 3 different people, that could get me 3 life terms. Also, I could be punished concurrently or consecutively. Concurrently means all at the same time. Consecutively means one after the other.
