How fair is the US justice system?

Innocent until proven guilty - but what does the case of Dominique Strauss-Kahn tells us about US justice system? A man who have not even yet been formally charged is under suicide watch in solitary confinement in high security prison. Images of a man who is supposed to be presumed innocent shown handcuffed around the world. He might have to spend months and months in jail to wait for his trial in spite of his presumed innocence. How fair is this? No matter what the result, this man's life has been ruined, but even worse if it turned out that he is innocent. Who and how would compensate him for this imprisonment that nobody can imagine even in their worst nightmares. And what would have happened in instead of DSK the person accused was e.g. head of state' or UN official? Would the approach and procedures going through US justice system be the same?
